Our Mission

Redefining career journeys through culture, sisterhood, and collective power.

Khawat  means "sisters" in Arabic

Khawat is a grassroots sisterhood in Aotearoa New Zealand, built to celebrate multicultural women, especially the daughters of migrants, on their career journeys and leadership pathways.

We’re connecting the dots — blending lived experience, culture, and identity with career development that reflects who we are. At the heart of our approach is the integration of Kaupapa Māori values — centring whanaungatanga (relationships), manaakitanga (care), and whakapapa (lineage) — to guide how we grow, lead, and support one another.

Khawat is a space where professional growth is not just about climbing ladders, but about creating circles of support, sharing stories, and leading in ways that honour our roots.

Whether through mentorship, creative networking, or storytelling events, Khawat is cultivating a new model of success — one that’s community-driven, culturally grounded, and legacy-focused.

Together, we are building a future where every woman feels seen, valued, and equipped — not just to survive, but to lead, thrive, and take up space across all industries.

Banat Al Sham by Khawat – Expression of Interest Form

Khawat Network invites you to apply to join Banat Al Sham, a creative and reflective space rooted in the cultural practices of Al Sham region, shared learning, and community care for those in the diaspora.

Over six sessions beginning in September, we’ll explore our relationships to identity and homeland, and build community through the traditional and creative practice of tatreez. Together, we’ll reflect, stitch, and grow. You’ll be invited to engage through journaling, collective conversation, and embroidery — with the option to share your piece(s) in a group exhibition at the end. The space will be shaped by all of us.

Sessions will run weekly on weekends either a Saturday or a Sunday , and all materials will be provided. Banat Al Sham is designed with people aged 25–35 in mind, particularly those navigating identity, belonging, and creative expression in the diaspora.

There are no “right” answers — we’re simply hoping to get a sense of who you are and how this offering might support you. Please note not all questions are required.
